Davao Takes Global Karate Spotlight as JKA International Championship Opens Under Heightened Security

August 27, 2026 - DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Davao City has moved into the international sporting spotlight as the 3rd JKA Philippines International Gasshuku & Karate-Do Championship 2026 officially opened Thursday, August 27, at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), drawing an impressive assembly of Japanese karate masters, international delegates, senior black belts, instructors and competitors

With foreign delegations and prominent guests arriving in the city, security has been placed on high alert, with organizers coordinating a comprehensive security and public-safety operation for the four-day international gathering.

According to event officials, a Davao Security and Public Safety Task Force, including Marine personnel, has been mobilized in addition to the University of Southeastern Philippines' security leadership and security team to help maintain a safe, orderly and professionally managed environment throughout the event.

The reinforced security presence reflects the international character of the championship, which has attracted representatives and distinguished personalities from Japan, the Philippines and other parts of the world.

Rodeno L. Dilag, Chairman of the event's Committee on Public Safety, said a full public-safety task force has been put in place in coordination with the various security components supporting the international competition.

Dilag, described by JKA Philippines Chairman Gilieto A. Luaque, Shihan, as a national expert in the fields of public safety and investigation, is overseeing the event's safety coordination as thousands of participants, guests and spectators are expected to move through the university during the four-day program.

JAPAN'S TOP KARATE MASTERS ARRIVE IN DAVAO

At the heart of the gathering is the presence of distinguished masters and instructors from Japan, giving Filipino and international karate practitioners an exceptional opportunity to train under some of the most respected names in the Japan Karate Association.

Leading the visiting JKA delegation is Koichiro Okuma, Shihan, a senior JKA master associated with the organization's international and foreign-affairs activities.

He is joined by internationally renowned Tatsuya Naka, Shihan, senior JKA instructor and examiner whose technical expertise in traditional Shotokan karate has earned him global recognition.

Also in Davao is Koji Chubachi, Sensei, a JKA instructor and accomplished world-level karate competitor who completes the distinguished instructional team for the historic Philippine event.

Their presence, together with the gathering of numerous senior Karate Black Belts, instructors, examiners and competitors, has transformed USeP into an international meeting ground for traditional Shotokan karate.

The four-day program combines intensive Gasshuku training, technical development, Dan and qualification examinations, kata and kumite instruction, elimination rounds and championship competition, culminating in the tournament finals on August 30.

HIGH-PROFILE PHILIPPINE AND JAPANESE GUESTS EXPECTED

The international stature of the gathering is also reflected in the government and diplomatic personalities expected to grace the occasion.

According to JKA Philippines Chief Executive Officer Emiliano A. Murillo, Consul-General of Japan in Davao ONO Hirotaka is expected to attend the international event.

Also expected to grace the occasion are Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, Vice President Sara Duterte and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go.
