Phil Collins opens up about ongoing health issues and reveals he's under '24-hour' care now

Phil Collins has given an update on his health, revealing that he is now under 24-hour care.

Ahead of his 75th birthday, the Genesis musician appeared on the BBC Era's podcast and opened up about the health challenges he has faced in recent years.

"It's an ongoing thing," he told host Zoe Ball. Phil Collins of Genesis performs on the opening night of their North American

"I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do. I've had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me."

"I got COVID in hospital. My kidneys started to back up. Everything seemed to converge at the same time," he continued.

Collins explained he'd undergone five knee surgeries and now only one of them works.

The In The Air Tonight artist confirmed that although he can walk, he does need the aid of crutches or some assistance.

Sharing more details about what happened with his kidneys, Collins admitted that "drinking too much" was behind why they had become so "messed up".

The Grammy winner has quit drinking alcohol and recently celebrated two years of sobriety.

"I enjoyed coming off tour. Coming off the road, I thought, right, I'm gonna do all those things that I couldn't do," he explained.

"I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital."

Collins admitted the last few years have been "difficult, interesting and  frustrating" but said things are going OK now. Phil Collins performs live on stage for the Italian date of his Still Not Dead Yet Live tour 2019. Milan (Italy), June 17th, 2019

In early 2025 the Genesis frontman admitted that his health has had a big impact on losing his passion for music, during an interview with MOJO magazine.

"I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore," he told the outlet, before he paused and added, "The thing is, I've been sick, I mean, very sick…"

The outlet did not share any more information about his condition.
