'I don't know how it ended up with me': The Artful Dodger stars reveal best items they've stolen from sets

EXCLUSIVE: They play convicts sent to Australia from London where they continue their thieving in Port Victory as Jack Dawkins and Norbert Fagin in The Artful Dodger.

But it turns out the stars of the Disney TV series, David Thewlis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, have both done a little light lifting of their own from the sets of their previous projects.

"It was unintentional, I didn't mean to steal it but I have a belt from Game of Thrones somewhere that somehow ended up with me," he says in London while promoting season 2 of The Artful Dodger.

The 35-year-old actor, who played Jojen Reed, a prophetic man who helped Bran Stark understand his powers in seasons three and four of the hit TV series, says he thinks he ended up going home one day in the thin accessory.

"I don't know how it ended up with me," he says.

"I don't even know where it is now, but I do have a Game of Thrones belt somewhere."

While Thewlis, best known to fans for his role as Remus Lupin in Harry Potter, created his wedding ring out of his wedding band from the famous movie franchise.

"We couldn't ever try and steal anything from Harry Potter, especially wands, although everyone tried the whole time," the 62-year-old tells nine.com.au.

"But I did, at the very end, steal my wedding ring because there were two of them, but the one I wore in the film."

"Because I liked it so much, I actually had it copied into gold and that is my wedding ring," he added holding up his left hand.David Thewlis in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1David Thewlis

"So this is not from the set because the wedding ring in the film is silver, so I got it copied into gold."

Thewlis adds he has a few fun props from The Artful Dodger set after being "encouraged" to nick things.

"I was actually encouraged to steal by the first director, because it was research," he tells nine.com.au.

Brodie-Sangster jokingly asks if he was "going around mugging people in Bondi", to which his co-star clarifies, "No, I didn't do it on the streets, only from the sets".David Campbell speaks with The Artful Dodger cast

The pair lived in Bondi while filming both season one and the upcoming season 2 of the TV series, which was shot in Sydney.

It also features a range of high-profile Aussie actors including Luke Bracey, Miranda Tapsell and Tim Minchin, whom they call "very dear, close, lifelong friends".

Thewlis previously visited Australia on a press tour for Harry Potter but says he "didn't really get" Sydney at the time, and his other Australian experience was a "quite famously disastrous" shoot in Cairns, for the '90s sci-fi horror movie The Island of Dr. Moreau.

"I kind of hated it then," he recalls.

"I didn't hate Australia but I hated that movie ... and then when we went to make season one [of The Artful Dodger], I just fell in love with it, everything about it.

"Just being by the ocean, being so close to the ocean constantly seems to be very important to me, I've discovered and I really feel at home there. I miss it."

Brodie-Sangster "didn't know that much about Australia" before coming here, but says he "really enjoyed [his] time" here.

"Kind of like what David says, I found that the ocean is – not that I ever went in it, I think I paddled once! – I also lived in Bondi, but I liked seeing it and the smell of it," he tells nine.com.au

"I grew up in London, so the ocean is quite a foreign thing to me but I love being so close to it.

But Thewlis sums up one of their most profound takeaways from their time in Australia.

"Oh, we know about drop bears now, we've learned they're not bloody real, you silly buggers," he says with a laugh.

The Artful Dodger returns for Season 2 on Disney+ from February 10.
