Kylie Minogue speaks out on the 'brutal' label she got at the start of her career
Kylie Minogue has spoken out on the "singing budgie" label she got at the very start of her career.
The Aussie singer, 57, who is now one of the world's most successful artists, appeared on Nova 96.9's Ricki-Lee & Tim this week when she spoke about the "brutal" realities of being in the public eye as a young star.
"Things like the 'singing budgie' and the press at the time..." she recalled of the disparaging nickname from the media back in the day.
"Now people have got a voice, they've got platforms where they can talk and say what they want to say. Back then, the press was it."
Minogue said she really wanted to be given a chance, as she launched her career during her time on iconic soap, Neighbours, back in the late '80s.
While she was still finding her feet as an artist at the time, she wishes the press would have been nicer.

"I understand, like 'Singing Budgie'... yeah, I hadn't earned my stripes," she added.
"I didn't know what I was doing. I wasn't very good... but, give her a chance! That was the thing that really got me," she finished.
Minogue went on to prove the naysayers wrong, going on to sell more than a whopping 80 million records worldwide.

Minogue is celebrating the release of her new Netflix documentary, Kylie, which chronicles her life and career.
And it seems nothing is off limits, with Minogue talking about her life-changing breast cancer diagnosis and even her relationship with late INXS rocker, Michael Hutchence.
"He was the first in so many ways. And of those firsts was heartbreak. I was devastated," she says in the docuseries.
"You go on and live your lives, but it was definitely an amazing point in time and I've probably been looking for something like that ever since and I haven't got it."
Kylie premieres on May 20 on Netflix.
