Woman claims she pulled Oscars red carpet from bin and took it home: 'Personal mission'

The Oscars red carpet is one of the most iconic moments of the entire awards season.

Sure, they hand out some awards inside, but the red carpet is the scene of some of the biggest celebrity moments.

But have you ever wondered what happens to the actual red carpet once the night ends? It seems it goes straight to a dumpster, according to the woman behind a now-viral video.

Paige Thalia, an LA-based production assistant, claims to now have a little bit of Oscars history in her own home after tracking down the red carpet used for Monday's Academy Awards arrivals.

Thalia took to TikTok two days ago to share a video of her quest to own her piece of the Oscars.

The video begins with her at home "just vacuuming the Oscars red carpet in my living room," before the scene changes to her walking down the street.

"The Oscars were last night and I'm looking for a rug, so let's go see if they'll give me some of the red carpet," she says to the camera.

The video shows her walking along the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, past a worksite before she arrives at her destination, the Dolby Theatre.

However, on arrival, she gets some bad news.

"The red carpet is gone. It's only 8.30am. I knew I should have come down at 5am. Maybe I'll see if it's around the back in the trash," she continues.

She adds she was at an event after the Oscars 10 years ago and found staff removing the carpets at 5am, but someone told her this year's was staying put longer.Unforgettable Oscars red carpet moments

"Liars!" she declares.

But all is not lost. Thalia heads to an area near the theatre and discovers pieces of the red carpet in a large skip bin.

"OK, so I found it. Security said I can just climb up here and get some," she says.

"OK, you're joking. These are huge. I can't take one that big, I need a big knife."

With no knife in sight, she decides to take the smallest piece she can find, which she says is "still huge".Paiga Thalia claims she found the 2026 Oscars red carpet in a dumpster near the Dolby Theatre.

She then lugs it past the Hollywood Walk of Fame, to her apartment, where it eventually takes pride of place in her living room.

She also uploaded a video of her adventure on TikTok, along with the comment, "I set a little personal mission of getting this three days ago and it actually happened, omg".

It quickly went viral, so far clocking up more than four million views and 494,000 likes, as well as thousands of comments.

Many were about the wasteful nature of dumping an entire red carpet after being used just once.

"You're telling me the Oscars don't have a storage unit or something?" asked one.

"I knew the entertainment industry was wasteful but actually WTF is this?" asked another.

Others had a more sarcastic take, one writing: "Guys, don't forget to use paper straws and only drink from reusable mugs. Let's save the planet so millionaires can carry on ruining it."

Well, at least Thalia saved a little piece from landfill.
