'It was really thrilling': Lisa Kudrow reflects on working with her son in new show shot on the same set as Friends

Lisa Kudrow marvelled at how her son, once a toddler on the set of Friends, is now a 27-year-old sharing the exact same sound stage with her as an actor.

Julian Murray Stern is making an appearance in Kudrow's new season of The Comeback, making the mum-of-one a little nostalgic.

"It was really thrilling," she told international journalists, including nine.com.au, at a press conference.

"Also we're on Stage 24, and I have a picture of him at two years old in the craft service kitchen washing his hands and then there he is, back and acting. Oh my God.

"I mean, he's been in little, short films, but not anything like this. That was heaven."

The actress joked she had "a little bit of guilt because I forgot that he was my son" during their scenes.

Kudrow was pregnant with Stern while filming the famous sitcom, leading to her character Phoebe becoming a surrogate on-screen.

The mother-and-son duo stepped out for a rare public appearance together at the show's premiere in LA on Thursday.

Stern isn't the only celebrity offspring on the show with Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor's daughter Ella Stiller also in the series, alongside cameos from Andrew Scott and Seth Rogen.

Kudrow created The Comeback, centred around actress Valerie Cherish , together with Michael Patrick King, best known to audiences for creating Sex and The City as well as 2 Broke Girls.

The first season of the sitcom was released in January 2006, the next nine years later in November 2014 and the third season has just been released this week, 11 years later.Lisa Kudrow

This season features a few references to Friends, with the actress saying it was hard not to reference the iconic show while filming there.

"[We] couldn't help it," Kudrow said.

"We were shooting on the Friends stage and I don't know, it just felt like there was an easy joke there that Valerie didn't even... she was only looking at the movies on the plaque. She didn't even see the TV shows and just, like 'We're gonna be the first hit for Stage 24!', you know.

"Friends was a hit, Mike and Molly and whatever else you'd see there!"

King admitted they "were mostly interested in how close we could get to Valerie actually saying the word Friends".Ella Stiller, Laura Silverman

"I mean, it was her saying, 'Frie-', and then Abbi Jacobson goes, "too much talking," just as she's about to say [Friends].

"So that was the third rail we were touching. We were more happy than happy to do that."

Kudrow recently admitted she's rewatching her famous sitcom, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! but says she's embarrassed to watch it in front of her husband.

"I'm on Season eight or nine. When did Rachel give birth? I don't know," she confessed.

"I wait until my husband goes to sleep, because I'm too embarrassed that I'm watching myself on TV every night!

"I'm not watching it for myself. I just like a sitcom before going to bed, and I ran out."

Friends ran for 10 seasons across 1994 to 2004, before returning for a one-off special in 2021, to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary in 2019.

The Comeback is streaming on HBO Max now.
