'Out of funds': James Van Der Beek's family share devastating update on 'uncertain future' following crippling treatment costs

James Van Der Beek's family have been left in an impossible position following his death at 48 after a colorectal cancer battle.

The Dawson's Creek star is survived behind his doting wife Kimberly, 44, and their six children, who are now facing an "uncertain future" and are "out of funds".

The devastating announcement was made clear in a crowd fundraising page for Van Der Beek's Austin-based family, highlighting that the staggering cost of medical bills had left them with more than just grief to contend with.

"In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future," the page read.

"The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.

"They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time."

The page added in part what the donations would go towards, saying: "Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children's education."

At time of publication, the page had raised an incredible $708,000 ($US505,000).

According to US Weekly, the likes of Ricki Lake and Derek Hough donated to the fund.

Just months before his passing, Van Der Beek sold off a selection of items ranging from props to iconic pieces of clothing from his decades-long acting career.

All money, he said, would go to families recovering from the "financial burden of cancer (including my own ?)".

"I've been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it's clear that the time is now," the star said in an Instagram post.

"While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore's auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years."

His death has sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood and stars have led tributes. 

When his family announced his passing, they shared a picture of the late star on his official Instagram page, writing: "Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning."

"He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.

"There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.

"For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."
