'Hot felon' Jeremy Meeks reflects on the reality of life in jail after his viral mugshot in 2014

His was a face that sent the internet into meltdown in 2014.

And now viral 2010's sensation Jeremy Meeks, better known online as the 'Hot Felon', has given rare insight into his time behind bars.

Reflecting on the immediate aftermath of his mugshot going viral, the criminal turned model reflected on his time in jail and why his family struggled to get visitation rights to see him.

The convicted felon as later served a modelling contract, left his wife, and would go on to date (and split with) heiress Chloe Green.

Speaking on Matthew Cox's podcast Inside True Crime, he revealed that while serving time, he'd received a slew of mail containing everything from money orders – to naked pictures from fans.

But Meeks said the unexpected overnight fame got to the point of being a bit over-the-top.

"I was probably getting 300 letters a day, and it was just too much," he said.

Not only was his mailbox inundated with correspondence from fans – they also went as far as snatching up the model's two allotted visitor passes.

"I'm getting random people visiting me and I'm denying them before I even walk up the stairs into the section and I'm like, 'I don't know who that person is!'" he recalled.

"Then they're like, 'Well, I'm still taking your visit. You can deny it, but I'm still going to take your visit for the week.'"

As a result, Meeks' own family was often unable to come in and see him, having been beaten to the punch by total strangers.

"So now my family can't come because I got f---ing random people coming to see me and it was so frustrating," he said.

He said that due to Sacramento's stringent rules surrounding visitation rights, his pleas for something to be done went unanswered.

It got to the point where Meeks would beg visiting fans not to return – just so he'd get the chance to see his young family.

"They're like, 'well, we drove all the way from Tennessee!'" the Love After Holidays actor recalled.

He'd respond that his then-five-year-old son "didn't understand why he was not at home, and needed to see me," and begged fans to write to him instead.

In 2015, Meeks was convicted for one count of being in possession of a firearm, and was later sentenced to 27 months in federal prison.June 2014: Felon’s mugshot goes viral

The former Crips gangster's mugshot was posted to the Stockton Police Department's Facebook page at the time, a move which sent him viral.

Despite his criminal background, he has gone on to have a successful career in modelling and acting.

Meeks scored his latest brand ambassadorship last November with the clothing company SAYA.
